Question by d m: How do I fix my destroyed credit do to a student loan.?
When I finished school I moved fron Ont to BC. I set up manul payments with the bank in BC and came in one day and the account had been closed.I had missed a couple payments but When I asked why it was closed the bank said I would have to contact the original branch, they said theydidnthave any record of a student loan through them? I called the Can Gov and it had been sent to collections? 7 months later I was contacted by a collection agency and set up internet payments and have paid it off over a year ago. When I contacted the student loan people they said they did not know I had moved to another province. This was 3 years later…..I have changed my Heath card, Drivers licence payed taxes and requested a copy of the original loan application as well as a copy of the intrest relief paper I had filled out and sent in to them. This is the only blemish on my credit report. Is there anything I can do to repair it?

Answer by CafePrincess - Stuff like this usually stays on your credit rating for 7 years – it sucks. with all of your documentation, you should still be able to get loans/mortgage/lease through a smaller agency, but at a higher rate. Good luck!
Question by vixen: i have a student loan should i pay them off?
my student loan is $ 5998.56 and $ 1101.56 of it is interest alone. i have talked to someone at the collections agency about paying it back but all i can afford is $ 50/month which he tells me would just be covering the interest for that month (which is $ 1.40 a day) i’m wondering if it’s even worth paying anything towards this when i won’t even be touching the principal itself.

Answer by Dogpile344 The point is, you took on this debt and promised to pay it back. So even if you are only covering the interest, you are still being responsible and more importantly, protecting your credit rating. At some point you will be able to afford more than $ 50/month and able to start nibbling away at the principal. Welcome to the real world!
